Cheap TWS or wireless earbuds usually compromise on quality. Well, the first entry-class TWS from Huawei, FreeBuds SE , is presented by offering premium quality and prices that are still pocket-friendly. Is FreeBuds SE able to compete with other TWS in its price class? Check out his review as follows. following.
Huawei Design
The Huawei FreeBuds SE immediately caught our attention with its very beautiful compact design. The appearance also looks premium with two color choices, namely white and amazonite blue.
This amazonite blue color is not in the market. So, it is suitable for users who want to be different or are bored with white.
The earbud module and protective case come with a very light weight. The weight of each earbud module is only 5.1 grams. Meanwhile, the empty weight of the protective box is only about 35 grams. Very space-saving and easy to carry around.
At first glance the design of the FreeBuds SE reminds us of Huawei’s previous TWS, the FreeBuds 4i. Looks quite similar. The difference is, the design of the stem or stem looks more oval and rounded.
Huawei FreeBuds SE adopts a semi in-ear design. According to Huawei, this design conforms to the contours of the outer ear and reduces pressure on the ear canal.
From our tests the semi in-ear design and very light weight make it very comfortable to use. Listening to music, watching movies, and playing games for hours doesn’t make your head or ears feel tired quickly.
One positive point of this semi in-ear design is that the earbud head design doesn’t fit into the ear canal like TWS or in-ear style earbuds. To ensure that it fits perfectly in the ear in the purchase package, Huawei provides three sizes of soft silicone ear tips.
As long as we use these ear tips, it has been proven to be able to keep the FreeBuds SE from falling out of the ear easily. Take a walk or exercise is very safe. The ear tips are also able to provide good passive sound isolation from the surrounding noise.
In addition, the FreeBuds SE have been designed to be dust and water resistant to the IP54 standard. So, you don’t have to worry about sweat or rain in uncertain weather conditions.
Features of Huawei FreeBuds SE
For the features of Huawei FreeBuds SE, it is quite standard. FreeBuds SE is not equipped with ANC or active noise canceling feature, transparency mode, and supports wireless charging.
The absence of the ANC feature is also nothing to worry about. The reason is, as we mentioned earlier, the semi-in-ear design and silicone ear tips are able to passively ward off noise quite well.
It doesn’t support transparency mode which means you have to be careful when using it in busy street conditions during sports or outdoor mobility. You also have to be a bit bothered by removing the earbud module from your ear or turning down the volume when talking to other people.
To make the settings easier, Huawei includes the Huawei AI Life application which can be downloaded by all Android and iOS phone users. The application is very simple. Only the gesture settings option and the option to disable the wear detection feature are available .
For gesture settings and wear detection, the FreeBuds SE relies on the G Sensor and IR Sensor. The gesture feature only supports the 2x tap function on the top of the left and right earbud module stems. Standard functions to pause/play and answer phone calls. Other options such as next/previous track and virtual assistant can be selected via the Huawei AI Life application.
It’s a shame that the gesture function doesn’t support the volume adjustment feature by doing a sliding gesture on the stem or stem. Volume settings can only be done via the volume settings of the connected device.
Meanwhile, the wear detection feature is very responsive. When our FreeBuds SE removed from the ear the music playing automatically stopped. Music automatically resumes when the FreeBuds SE is placed in the ear again.
In this TWS Huawei embeds two integrated microphones with active noise canceling features. When trying to make a phone call our voices can be heard more clearly by the other person. Meanwhile, FreeBuds SE connectivity relies on Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. This feature allows FreeBuds SE to quickly connect to all devices via a Bluetooth connection. To start connecting you can press the button on the inside of the protective case until the LED light flashes quickly.
It also supports Open-to-pair features. Thanks to this feature, FreeBuds SE only needs to be connected once the first time you use it to your phone or other device. For further use when the protective box is opened FreeBuds SE will be directly connected and ready to use.
Huawei FreeBuds SE Audio Quality
To produce sound the Huawei FreeBuds SE brings a dynamic driver measuring 10mm and an ultra-sensitive polymeric diaphragm design. To further test the audio quality we paired the FreeBuds SE to the Huawei P50 Pro phone. Music is played through the Spotify application with Very High streaming quality.
Our first test was to see how powerful the bass was by playing The Motto by Tiesto ft. Ava Max and Crazy What Love Can Do from David Guetta ft. Becky Hill, Ella Henderson. In both songs, we think FreeBuds SE is capable of delivering powerful bass performance. Bass beat feels round, not dominating so that vocals and other sound effects can still be heard clearly.
Testing continues to rock genre songs. We play Duality and Psychosocial from Slipknot. In this song, again, FreeBuds SE is able to present a very good sound performance. Generally cheap TWS in rock songs will be less comfortable on the ears. This is because it is dominant in the treble sound or high-frequency sound which tends to be spicy in the ear. However, it is different with FreeBuds SE. In both songs, we can still enjoy the shrill sound of the guitar, bass, to the fast pounding of the double drum pedals and the vocalist’s screams very comfortably in the ears. The vocal separation sounds clear and all the accompanying instruments are heard in detail and clearly.
Next we played audiophile music By The Time I Get The Phoenix and Overjoyed from Varitda Bhirombhakdi. From our testing the FreeBuds SE’s staging effect feels quite extensive. Here the vocals sound very clear. Meanwhile, the accompaniment instruments in the background can again be presented with very detailed and neat separations.
The final test was for gaming and watching multimedia content. It’s incomplete not to use this TWS to play games or watch movies from your cellphone. From our tests relying on Bluetooth 5.2 the latency level is quite low. Although there is no Game mode, the sound of the games and videos that we play doesn’t feel delayed.
In short, we think FreeBuds SE is suitable for all music genres. Balanced sound performance by highlighting the character of the vocal sound that is clear and detailed is its advantage. It’s quite rare for us to find a TWS with sound quality like the FreeBuds SE in its price class. Back again, everyone has their own tastes and preferences. For some people who prefer a boomy bass sound that masks other sounds, the FreeBuds SE is not the right choice for you.
Huawei FreeBuds SE battery
Huawei FreeBuds SE promises up to 6 hours of music listening time. With the addition of the protective case, you can get a usage time of up to about 24 hours. Very sufficient to accompany daily activities. To recharge the battery through the protective case takes about 1.5 hours. Meanwhile, the battery in the protective case can be fully recharged in about 2 hours. It’s a shame that the fast refill feature is absent in this TWS.
Conclusion
The Huawei FreeBuds SE is not a feature-rich TWS. However, through FreeBuds SE, Huawei has succeeded in proving that cheap TWS can still be of high quality. With crystal clear audio quality, a very comfortable design and long battery life, this TWS really stands out among other TWS in its price class. The Huawei FreeBuds SE also includes an all-around TWS. Suitable for listening to various genres of music. It can also be relied on for various other needs from gaming, enjoying video content to voice calls.
There is one more attraction of FreeBuds SE. Huawei provides very attractive after-sales service support. If one of the earbud modules is lost, Huawei allows customers to buy a new earphone at the service center. So, customers don’t need to buy a pair or a set, besides that, customers can also get discounts of up to 70% for this service.
With the selling price in the range of 400 thousand Rupiah, Huawei FreeBuds SE can indeed be an alternative to Apple’s AirPods. If you prioritize sound quality and low prices, we highly recommend FreeBuds SE and must add to your shopping list.
