NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a storage medium that can be connected to a network. This means that all data stored on the NAS can be accessed anytime and anywhere as long as you have internet access. The Synology Diskstation DS220+ is one of them. Want to know more about how it performs? Check out his review as follows.
Synology Diskstation DS220+ design
The Synology Diskstation DS220+ comes with a minimalist design. The body design is very sturdy. The dimensions are also compact. On the front, you can find a plastic cover panel. On the right side is the power button, copy button and one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port.
Synology looks to have designed the Diskstation DS220+ to be easy to use. To access the two bay slots where you can install the hard disk, you can remove the cover panel on the front.
Removing the slot bay is very easy. Just need to press the push button at the top of the slot and pull it out. To install the hard disk is also just as easy. All can be done directly by hand.
Without the need for additional tools such as screwdrivers. This bay slot can be installed with a 3.5-inch SATA hard disk, 2.5-inch SATA HDD and 2.5-inch SATA SSD. On the back can be found ventilation holes with cooling fans, two LAN ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port and a reset button.
The setup process is very fast and easy
To start using the Synology Diskstation DS220+ you must first install the hard disk in the bay slot as storage space. After that, connect the Synology Diskstation DS220+ to the router via the LAN port and press the power button.
One plus is that the NAS setup process is very quick and easy. Can be done even by ordinary users who have never setup a NAS before. After all is ready you just need to open a browser and go to the site find.synology.com. The Synology web assistant will open automatically. Then, you will be asked to create a Synology account. The next setup process just needs to follow all the instructions that are already available.
Features of Synology Diskstation DS220+
The Synology Diskstation DS220+ is powered by an Intel Celeron J4025 processor. The RAM system it carries is 2GB onboard. If not, there is still one additional RAM slot that can be installed with a maximum of 4GB RAM. So, the total RAM that it can support can be up to 6GB.
This NAS has been running the latest operating system DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.0 which was released to the public last July. DSM 7.0 is a web-based operating system. So, it can be used directly via a web browser on your phone, tablet or PC.
Compared to the previous version, DSM 7.0 appears with a more minimalist interface. It looks more modern and easier to use. At first glance the interface style of DSM 7.0 is quite familiar and resembles the Android OS interface on a phone or tablet.
The application that has been installed directly is File Station. The function of this application is similar to File Explorer on the Windows operating system. Useful for doing file searches. Here you can also create new folders or delete folders. Basically, for home use as storage media and file backups, this device can be used immediately. Simply rely on the File Station application.
However, other usage scenarios are also possible. DSM 7.0 brings the Package Center feature. Functions like an app store. Here there is a wide selection of applications with different functions that can be selected according to the needs and usage scenarios.
For example, want to create a video streaming service. Synology already provides an application called Video Station. Want to make a music streaming service there is Audio Station. For photo backups, there is also Synology Photo and many other applications. It will be an added value if Synology provides tutorials on additional features of the DSM. At least, this will be more helpful especially for lay users who have never used a Synology NAS before.
As we mentioned earlier, this NAS can be accessed anywhere. This is possible through the support of the Quickconnect feature. After the Quickconnect access is open, you can directly access the Synology Diskstation DS220+. Anytime and anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. This feature allows you to have a cloud computing service like Google Drive, One Drive or Dropbox.
Access can be via a smartphone/tablet or laptop via a browser. To make it easier, Synology provides a variety of mobile applications. For example, the File Station application can be accessed via the DS File application on a smartphone.
In practice, from our tests for mobile applications, just relying on one DS File application is enough. We have direct access to move files or open files stored on the Synology Diskstation DS220+. Photo files, videos, music, to various types of document formats can also be played directly via a smartphone or tablet.
Another interesting feature of the DS220+ is the presence of USB Copy support. You need to install the USB Copy application from the Package Center before using this feature. The USB Copy function can directly copy all data stored on a portable flash/hard disk or memory card to the Synology Diskstation DS220 storage space. Interestingly, this can be set automatically. So, users only need to plug a flash drive, portable hard disk/SSD, or memory card reader into the front USB port. After that press the C button above the power button and the backup process will start immediately. It is ideal for performing data backups.
The USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the back of the body also allows users to plug in an external HDD or SSD. We tried plugging in an external SSD and moving the data. The process of transferring data can take place quickly without problems from an external SSD to the Synology Diskstation DS220 or vice versa.
Synology Diskstation DS220+ Performance
The Synology Diskstation DS220+ that we review below comes with two Synology SATA 3.5mm hard drives of 8TB each. The storage space supports various RAID configurations from Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1. The benchmark results for the two hard disks are as follows.
Synology hard disk read and write speed is quite good. It is very adequate for storage media for various documents and multimedia files. It should be noted, as a network-based storage medium moving files to the Synology Diskstation DS220+ will also depend on the speed of your internet network.
For multimedia testing we tried to save various multimedia files such as high resolution video and audio. As a result, the Synology Diskstation DS220+ allowed us to stream Full HD and 4K resolution videos without any problems on a PC or smartphone. This makes it ideal as a multimedia server that can be accessed anywhere. Not only as a device for data backup only.
It is undeniable that very easy operation is the advantage of this NAS. Ideal for beginners who have never used a NAS before for home use or small to mid-sized businesses. The two HDD slots it carries are sufficient to create large-capacity storage space. The RAM sector that can be added is a plus. Very flexible. That way, users can improve their abilities according to future needs. The DSM 7.0 operating system is also very good. The various applications available are very complete at the Package Center. Making it highly reliable for a wide variety of usage scenarios.
Synology Diskstation DS220+ is suitable for
Creator content: two HDD slots can be installed a large capacity HDD. Can be used as a data backup medium for large photo and video files. The Copy feature will also be very helpful to shorten data backups.
