Samsung announced that it has successfully developed the industry’s first 16-gigabit (Gb) 14nm LPDDR5X DRAM memory in the mobile device industry. In addition to promising a higher processing speed, this memory is also claimed to be more power efficient than LPDDR5. Like what?
LPDDR5X DRAM Technology
For your information, LPDDR5X stands for Low Power Double Data Rate 5X. This latest generation offers speeds of up to 8.5 Gbps which promises 1.3 times better performance than LPDDR5 6.4 Gbps. LPDDR5 itself was first introduced in 2018.
Even more interesting, with faster performance LPDDR5X uses 20 percent less power than LPDDR5. In addition, the 16Gb LPDDR5X chip allows up to 64 GB of memory (RAM) usage on devices such as smartphones.
Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM is designed to drive further growth across high-speed data service applications including 5G, artificial intelligence or AI, and metaverse.
“In recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and metaverse, which rely on extremely fast processing of large-scale data, have grown rapidly. Our LPDDR5X will expand the use of high-performance and low-power memory beyond smartphones, and bring new capabilities to AI-driven applications such as servers and even automobiles,” said SangJoon Hwang, Senior Vice President and Head of the DRAM Design Team, Samsung Electronics.
Collaboration with global chipset manufacturers
Samsung explained that starting later this year, it will collaborate with global chipset manufacturers to further introduce LPDDR5X technology.
