SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB Review

Storage space solutions now do not only have to be large in capacity. But, it is also mandatory to have fast performance. Thus transferring very large files can take less time. To answer this need, Western Digital launched the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB. Curious about how fast the performance of this ultra-compact portable SSD is? Check out the reviews as follows.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB design

The 1TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD has dimensions that are very compact and lightweight. The dimensions are more or less similar to the Western Digital My Passport SSD that we reviewed earlier. So, it is very space-saving and easy to travel with.

The difference is, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD comes with a sportier design. Not as beautiful as its Western Digital My Passport SSD sibling. On the body, you can also find a hook hole for attaching this SSD to a belt or bag while traveling.

One feature of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is its extremely robust design. This is important to avoid losing data when unexpected events occur. The body design is resistant to falling from a height of up to two meters. In fact, the body is also dust and water resistant to the IP55 standard. Just being hit by a collision, shock, splash or water spill is clearly safe.

To accentuate the premium aura, the entire body surface is covered with silicone material. This layer is also useful for added protection, as well as making it more comfortable when held.

To connect to a PC the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD relies on a USB-C 3.2 Gen-2 port with a USB-C connector. The built-in USB-C cable is a bit short, but fortunately the package includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter. So, this SSD will still be compatible to PC systems that don’t yet support USB-C.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB performance

As we mentioned earlier the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD offers very fast performance. The speed is claimed to be capable of up to 1,050 MB / s for read speeds and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB / s. To try it out we connected the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD to the Lenovo YOGA Slim 7i Carbon. Testing with CrystalDisk Mark the results are as follows.

From the results of these benchmarks, it can be seen that his very fast reading and writing ability is not just a claim. Then what about the real performance? We tried to transfer a 4GB video file from the laptop’s storage space to this SSD. As a result, a file with a size of 4GB can be moved in just about 5 seconds. Even though it is very fast, when doing backups for transferring very large files or playing content directly from this SSD, we feel a little warm on the surface of the body. In our opinion, this is quite reasonable due to its very fast performance and fortunately it is not too disturbing.

Thanks to its very fast transfer speed, it is clear that the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is very capable for medium data backup of high-resolution photo and video files to games whose size is currently getting bigger. Moreover, this SSD is also compatible with Windows and MacOS operating systems and includes support for password protection features based on 256-bit AES encryption.

Conclusion

From our tests, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a proven solution for large data storage spaces. Its compact and robust design is also a plus, making it quite ideal for outdoor use. The selling price in the range of USD $210 is indeed classified as premium. But, in our opinion the price is quite commensurate with all the features, performance and enormous capacity. We highly recommend the SanDisk Extreme Portable 1TB SSD for content creators, gamers to professionals who need a practical storage solution with a large capacity while having very fast performance.
