Slowly but surely SSDs are becoming the standard storage space for PC systems. It is also transmitted to external storage media. External hard disks are starting to lose popularity with external SSDs. The main advantage of an external SSD is its dimensions. External SSDs can come with large capacities and very compact dimensions. One example is the Western Digital My Passport SSD. Are you curious about other advantages of the Western Digital My Passport SSD? Check out the following reviews.

Western Digital My Passport SSD design

This year’s Western Digital My Passport SSD comes with a more beautiful design. The surface of the body comes with a wavy pattern. The four corners of the body are rounded on each side. Thanks to this design, the Western Digital My Passport SSD is very comfortable in your hand. The color choices are also very interesting, namely gray, blue, red, and gold.

Aside from the beautiful design, this external SSD feels very premium. The body case is made of metal. The body design is resistant to shock and vibration to protect all your data stored on it. You also don’t need to worry when this SSD is dropped. The reason is, the Western Digital My Passport SSD can withstand falls from a height of up to 1.98 meters.

Turning to the dimensions, with body dimensions of 3.94 x 2.17 x 0.35 inches, the Western Digital My Passport SSD is not the most compact external SSD. But, overall these dimensions are still very space-saving and light with a weight of only 45.7 grams. This SSD can be very easily carried into a bag or trouser pocket when traveling.

To connect to a PC, the Western Digital My Passport SSD relies on a USB-C 3.2 Gen-2 port with a USB-C connector. The good news is, if your PC system does not yet support USB-C ports, the purchase package includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter. So, there is no need to spend extra to buy an additional adapter.

Western Digital My Passport SSD performance

The Western Digital My Passport SSD brings NVMe SSD technology. There are three capacity options, namely 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. The unit that we are reviewing is the one with a capacity of 1TB.

Carrying NVMe technology the ability to move data very fast. Read speed can be up to 1050 MB / s and write speed up to 1000 MB / s. Almost twice as fast as the previous generation Western Digital My Passport SSD. The benchmark results are as follows:

In practice, when we try to move a 60GB file from the SSD which is our laptop storage space to the Western Digital My Passport SSD it only takes about 2 minutes 30 seconds. Opening a 4K video file for editing feels very short. Its very fast read and write capabilities clearly make it ideal for large file storage spaces such as games and high-resolution photo or video files.

Overall, we are very satisfied with the performance that this SSD offers. Even so, for long-term use, we also feel that the body surface of the Western Digital My Passport SSD will indeed feel a bit hot. However, the heat is still relatively normal and not too annoying.

Then what about the compatibility? The Western Digital My Passport SSD is compatible with Windows and MacOS operating systems. For Windows operating systems it is compatible with Windows OS 8.1 and Windows 10. Meanwhile, for MacOS it is compatible with MacOS Catalina, Mojave or High Sierra. So, you could say that the Western Digital My Passport SSD is compatible with almost all Windows and MacOS-based PC devices.

Security features are also available on the Western Digital My Passport SSD to ensure your data is always safe from prying hands. This security feature is based on 256-bit AES encryption. In addition, the Western Digital My Passport SSD is also equipped with software support to make it easier for users to back up to cloud computing services. For MacOS Western Digital My Passport SSD users, it is also compatible with Apple’s Time Machine backup feature.

Conclusion

In the external SSD market, a lot of people are starting to appear. However, in our opinion, the Western Digital My Passport SSD manages to stand out by combining three main advantages, namely a very beautiful compact design, large capacity options and fast performance.

With selling prices starting at IDR 1,899,000 for 500GB capacity, IDR 2,999,000 for 1TB capacity, and IDR 6,299,000 external SSDs are indeed classified as premium and not cheap. This selling price also includes a limited warranty support of up to five years. Above average other external SSDs which are generally limited to 3 years.

However, if you don’t mind the selling price, we highly recommend the Western Digital My Passport SSD for anyone. This external SSD is suitable for content creators, creative workers, to office workers who need an external SSD storage solution that is compact, large capacity and an exclusive design that is not in the market.
