When it comes to the IoT ecosystem, Xiaomi is arguably one of the most diligent brands in completing its product range in the Indonesian market. The product selection is enormous and comes from a variety of different categories. Take the Mi TV Stick, for example, a tiny and cheap device that can turn your old TV into an Android-based smart TV.
The presence of the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick in our opinion can be an attractive solution for users who want to enjoy thousands of content from the Android platform on their TV, but don’t have the funds to buy a Smart TV yet. Are you curious about the sophistication of the Mi TV Stick? Come on , just take a look at our review:
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick design
As we mentioned above, the Mi TV Stick is a small device that you can easily slip into your pants pocket. Its tiny and minimalist body makes this device ideal to move around as needed. Want to install it on the TV in the living room and then remove it and attach it to the TV in the room, everything can be done plug and play .
The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick appears with a body dominated by black. In addition to the HDMI interface, on the body you will find a microUSB port for connecting the power cable to the power adapter which is included in the sales package. You will also find an HDMI cable extender which is very useful if the HDMI port on your TV is pointing too close to the wall.
Still from the Mi TV Stick sales package, Xiaomi doesn’t forget to provide a Bluetooth-based remote that is similar to the one used on the Xiaomi Smart TV. This simple remote allows you to navigate and browse all the features of Android TV. Xiaomi has also embedded a dedicated button for quick access to the Google Assistant, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video.
The Mi TV Stick Remote is also equipped with a microphone to make it easier for you to search by voice. To be able to turn on, this remote requires two AAA batteries as a power source. It should be underlined is that the Mi TV Stick remote only relies on a Bluetooth connection, and there is no IR blaster support like on the Mi TV remote.
How to operate the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick
Basically there are no complicated steps to install Mi TV Stick on your TV. The main requirement is just to make sure the TV has an HDMI port. Just connect the Mi TV Stick to the HDMI port on your TV, then move the input on the TV according to the HDMI port used.
Connecting the microUSB cable to the power adapter is obligatory, in order to support the power required by the Mi TV Stick. If your TV has a USB port, you can also connect the cable to the TV as long as the power is right. As far as our experience with existing TVs at home, we prefer to use a power adapter because connecting the power cable to the USB port on the TV makes the performance of the Mi TV Stick less stable.
Oh yes, to be able to enjoy content from the Mi TV Stick you can also take advantage of other devices that have an HDMI port. Yes, it doesn’t have to be a conventional TV. You can use a monitor or even a projector. But what must be remembered, Mi TV Stick does not have a special port for audio. That means the audio on the Mi TV Stick depends on the built-in speakers on the TV, monitor or projector. Make sure your TV has an audio out port if you want to enjoy content with a richer sound using external speakers.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick performance
The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick adopts the Android 9.0 operating system for TVs. As with any Android-based Smart TV in general, with the Mi TV Stick you can access all the applications available on the Google Play Store. Call it YouTube, Netflix, Viu, Disney +, Vidio, and many more. For internet business, you can connect the Mi TV Stick with a WiFi network at home.
The interface is also more or less the same as other Android TVs. On the Home page you will find a series of installed applications and recommendations for interesting content from your favorite applications. To be able to download other applications, you can log in to the Google Play Store using the same account on your smartphone. Because you have Bluetooth, you can also connect other Bluetooth-based devices such as wireless headphones or Bluetooth keyboards.
Mi TV Stick is armed with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. At first glance it seems mediocre. But for us, to support its function as a device that allows us to watch content from various video streaming applications, these specifications are more than sufficient. When first activated, the Mi TV Stick also still has around 4.7 GB of free storage space which we can use to download many applications.
Please note that the content displayed by the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is still limited to 1080p resolution only. Yes, it can’t be 4K. The performance that is presented also cannot be called agile. Sometimes there is still lagging when switching applications or when just browsing the Home page. Maybe through the latest update, later Xiaomi can further optimize its performance. Meanwhile, from the audio sector, Mi TV Stick supports DTS and Dolby multichannel HD.
Even though it’s not perfect yet, we think the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is one of the best options for those of you who want to enjoy all the content on Android TV without having to spend big money to buy a new TV. Especially if at home you already have an old TV with a good quality panel, in our opinion, buying the Mi TV Stick is a more tempting step than buying an entry-level class Android Smart TV. Apart from that, Mi TV Stick is also suitable for those of you who travel a lot. Just bring Mi TV Stick, you can still enjoy your favorite shows by connecting it to the TV in the hotel room.
For those who are interested, the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is sold for only 500 thousand rupiah.
